STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN
Problem:
How to create an essential art piece that spans four consecutive floors, dividing the spaces while providing light axes, focal points, and connections visible from all surrounding areas.
Solution:
In plan, radiating lines extend from the epicenter of the circular stair, guiding the placement of the risers and passing through the apex of each column flute. At the top of the tower, a vintage radial glass fixture evokes the sun above.
The work draws inspiration from Marcel Duchamp’s Nude Descending a Staircase, the Fibonacci spiral, and the historic architecture of a lost New York era, particularly Donald Deskey’s work at Radio City. The railings were conceived as taut strings, like those of a harp or guitar, animating the descent. The piece was hand-sculpted on scaffolding, since three-dimensional CAD modeling alone could not fully resolve the design in context or capture the opportunities offered by the site.
