The SheltonMindel® brand continues the legacy of the firm founded by Peter L. Shelton & Lee F. Mindel in 1978 as Shelton Mindel & Associates. The firm continues to provide complete architectural, interiors and product design services for corporate, cultural, academic, retail, recreational, hospitality and residential clients, under the sustaining leadership of Lee F. Mindel, Architect, D.P.C., a New York Design Professional Corporation which performs all architectural services.

The firm is one of the top American interpreters of classic modernism in the industry today. Guided by principles of light, nature and simplicity, SheltonMindel®’s renowned designs and creations focus on simple construction, organic shapes and unity of materials. Derived from form and function, SheltonMindel®’s work transcends both to become art forms.

The firm has been a recipient of NYCxDESIGN awards since 2018; Interior Design Magazine Best of Year awards and finalist mentions since 2006; American Architecture awards, Good Design awards, and International Architecture awards from the Chicago Athenaeum Museum since 2004; Society of American Registered Architects awards since 1999; Rosco awards for product design since 1986;  AIA awards for architecture since 1985; and a Progressive Architecture citation.

In 1996, the firm was inducted into the Interior Design Magazine Hall of Fame. Architectural Digest has recognized SheltonMindel® as one of the top 100 design firms on its AD100 list since 1997, and in 2021, Lee F. Mindel was one of the few designers inducted into the AD100 Hall of Fame for contributions to both architecture and interior design. Elle Decor has included SheltonMindel® on the Elle Decor A-List since 2010, and in 2022, honored the firm with the Design Titans status.

The American Institute of Architecture, San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, National Academy of Design and Houston Museum of Fine Arts have exhibited the firm’s work in both traveling and permanent exhibitions. Product design lines include collections for Sutherland, Knoll, Waterworks, Design Within Reach, Jack Lenor Larsen, V’Soske, and most recently Ralph Pucci. Peter L. Shelton and Lee F. Mindel, FAIA were recognized as the Deans of American Design in 2005, and were the recipients of the prestigious 2011 Cooper Hewitt National Design Award awarded at the White House by First Lady Michelle Obama.

In 2022, Lee F. Mindel opened the doors to Galerie56, a SheltonMindel®-designed gallery space that celebrates the cultural intersection of art, architecture, and design. With revolving exhibitions curated by Mindel in collaboration with galleries and artists from across the world, Galerie56 reflects deeply American values of openness, transparency, and desire to welcome all international cultures to be a part of a democratic discourse available to all.
