CENTRAL PARK WEST RESIDENCE

Problem:

In a dated unit in an Arts and Crafts building, create a three-bedroom modern apartment to maximize views, light, and exposure while uniting the traditional details with contemporary designs.

Solution:

A single regular volume of dark wood is inserted in the center of the project to unite and order a disparate collection of uniquely shaped spaces around it. Contained in this volume at the metaphorical and literal center of the owner’s apartment life is a custom library housing his literary collection. Radiating out from this centerpiece are the public and private spaces of the apartment. To meet the program requirement, there are two bedrooms and a den with a custom white oak nook containing a daybed. The custom nook provides an intimate space for relaxation, invoking the Scandinavian design ideals of hygge and Gemütlichkeit which are also reflected in the selection of furniture and finishes, procured for their similar vintage to the building.

Arrayed to the open southern and western exposures are the public spaces of a living room, dining room, kitchen and breakfast area. The configuration of the central solid volume and the open spaces around it results in long axial views around the perimeter of the former, bringing natural light deep into the rear spaces of the apartment and making the views from the windows available to most of the unit.
