ART AERIE ABOVE CENTRAL PARK

Problem:

The goal in the iconic 15 Central Park West condominium building is to liberate a series of disconnected rooms that had turned inward on themselves, failing to acknowledge both Central Park and the views toward the Hudson River.

Solution:

By creating a liberated sequence of axial spaces, the design allows for uninterrupted sightlines, enabling views across the unit—from Central Park to the Hudson River. The tools used to achieve this include an extensive art collection and a continuous wood datum art wall that incorporates picture hangings and integrated lighting, extending from floor to ceiling. This feature enhances the perception of ceiling height, making the space feel even more expansive.

A unique challenge arose from the presence of a balcony and the unit above, resulting in a drop slab ceiling in the living room. This was resolved through a series of forced-perspective design elements, creating a proscenium that frames the park itself.

The space is articulated as an open plan, and it offers flexibility through movable walls and pocket doors. The palette remains intentionally neutral to provide a backdrop for the extensive art collection.

The primary bedroom suite, with its rose-colored onyx and sunset-hued furnishings, mirrors the colors of sunrise and sunset over the park. On the easternmost side, the kitchen embraces the morning light with a burst of yellow, reflecting the sun as it rises over the river.

Furnishings and artwork are seamlessly integrated into the architecture, creating a unified and immersive environment. In the living room, the park-facing proscenium acts almost like a Juliet balcony, with a custom-made low sofa that evokes the sensation of a railing overlooking the landscape. The furnishings and accessories are carefully curated to complement the diverse artworks, orchestrating a harmonious and visually engaging environment.
